About
BIO: Mikal Marie McAllister left a career in acting and music in New York City to move to Dakar in 2016 where she lived with her husband and three children until late 2023 when she moved to Athens, Greece. She has worked as a photographer, videographer, and clothing designer co-creating the eco-friendly women’s line, Magoma. Mikal’s 2022 Biennale OFF exhibition, “Strands”, explored themes of sexual violence in an interactive installation using leftover fabrics. In Spring 2023 she participated in the DWG Art Show exhibiting pieces inspired by the beauty and chaos of Dakar and the surrounding sea. Mikal primarily works with oil on canvas, using multiple layers creating abstract scapes of textures and color.

ARTIST STATEMENT: When I start out on an empty canvas, I rarely have intentions about what will fill the empty canvas, but often the ideas about motherhood or womanhood or the surrounding geography show up like a thunder then echo and repeat.
